TEA report questions Beaumont ISD's employment of Calvin Walker
Almost two years after Calvin Walker pleaded guilty to a federal tax charge, a preliminary Texas Education Agency report continues to dog the Beaumont ISD board of trustees for its subsequent actions, including continuing to employ Walker as the district's electrician.
In the preliminary report, sent to the district last week, TEA investigators called out board members for their failure to protect the district from fraud, which includes allegations contained in a federal indictment charging two former employees with embezzling of $4 million.
According to the TEA, the board of trustees failed to protect the district from fraud and waste, specifically noting the board's willingness to continue working with Walker after he was deemed "dishonest."
In 2011 Walker was indicted on 37 counts of defrauding the school district, The following year he pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of failing to pay his taxes on time.
