Loving County wants to store spent nuclear fuel

LUBBOCK —

Texas officials in the nation’s least populous county want to store used nuclear fuel from the state’s four reactors — and possibly from other states — in a business venture they believe could bring jobs and billions of dollars to the region.

Loving County Judge Skeet Lee Jones said he’s met with elected officials at the local, state and federal level and all are supportive of the effort to build a site that would store spent nuclear fuel rods in Far West Texas.

“When we first mentioned it there was a little hypertension,” Jones said of the county commissioners’ reaction when the subject was broached about a year ago. “After we learned how it’d be taken care of, the benefit of having one is much greater than the risk that’s involved.”

The topic could be part of the 2015 legislative session after Texas House Speaker Joe Straus, R-San Antonio, instructed lawmakers to study the issue. Straus asked for specific recommendations on state and federal action needed to permit a disposal or interim storage site in Texas.

considered disposable.

WIPP- 2 hours away - all fucked up. Check.

WCS - 30 minutes away. "We're just gonna store used hospital gloves." Lying bastards. Be sure to notice the wonderful white plastic landscape liner meant to keep this waste for thousands of years. Go check your lawn where they put the plastic down, rocks on top, and see the weeds poking through. No worries, though, nuclear waste is a lot weaker than dandelions.

And now this - no thanks, someone else take a turn.
