Rep. Blake Farenthold: It's OK to negotiate, but don't cave on core values

CORPUS CHRISTI — WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Blake Farenthold sat on the couch in his Capitol Hill office after a long day and another tough decision. He hoped folks back home would understand his choice.

The tea party Republican had voted for a compromise that would bring him grief in the weeks ahead but push the federal government’s dysfunctional budgeting process toward normalcy.

“I could have easily voted no, but I’m really trying to move forward and get some stuff done,” Farenthold, 52, of Corpus Christi, said on a December evening.

He’s learned he must compromise and reach across the aisle to get things done, he said. Local Democratic leaders are beyond skeptical.

“Not only does he not reach across the aisle, he sits as far away from the aisle as possible,” Nueces County Democratic Party Chairman Joseph L. Ramirez said.
