Many assume that all of the nation's veterans are entitled to health care through the Veteran's Administration, but that's not the case; a veteran must have served for two continuous years or the full period for which they were called to active duty in order to be eligible. There are some exceptions like for individuals who were discharged for a disability sustained in the line of duty but about 1.3 million veterans remain uninsured nationwide.
According to a report by Pew using analysis from the Urban Institute, approximately 258,600 of those veterans are living below the poverty line in states refusing to expand Medicaid. Without veteran's benefits and with incomes too low to qualify for subsidies to use on the state exchanges these veterans are left without affordable coverage options.
Twenty states are staunchly refusing to expand the program, and a few are still debating the issue.

(24,007 posts)If current Google info is correct, there are 15 military bases in this state, which would suggest a relatively large veteran population, as retired vets often reside near bases so as to take advantage of the assorted services at the bases. When I was stationed in San Antonio some years ago, there were 5 bases just there.
Military base populations also contribute significantly to local economies.

(4,695 posts)Organizations are losing the grants that sustained them as ACA provides for Expanded Medicaid, that the Texas Legislature and Governor Perry, declined. You are right, there is a deficit forming in the cities, counties and state economies because of HATE that Republicans have for the poor and the average taxpaying Texans and their family. Texans are dying in the mean time. Children are going hungry too.

I don't know if the owner of that car realizes the irony. He may never realize it.

had any sense they would start closing the bases in Texas. Texas has proved many times that our soldiers and veterans mean nothing to them. It's all about the federal dollars that flood the economy.
