Bill to allow public companies to sell hard alcohol dies -- no liquor at Walmart

Legislation to give Wal-Mart and other publicly traded companies the right to sell liquor in Texas is officially dead, leaving the mega-retailer and others companies to hang their hopes of selling whiskey and other spirits on the courts.

“Time to move onto other things,” said state Sen. Kelly Hancock, a Republican from North Richland Hills and author of Senate Bill 609, which would have ended a state policy that prohibits publicly-traded companies from selling booze and eliminated the law forbidding a business from owning or holding more than five package store permits.
