Abbott names former Patrick aide to lead State Board of Education
AUSTIN Gov. Greg Abbott on Thursday selected Donna Bahorich, a former campaign manager and senatorial district director for Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, as chairwoman of the State Board of Education.
Bahorich, a Republican Party activist and former telephone company district manager from Houston, will succeed Barbara Cargill of The Woodlands. Former Gov. Rick Perry named Cargill to the first of two two-year terms as the boards leader in July 2011.
While Cargill and Bahorich are both social conservatives, Cargill is seen as being more willing to consider the views of the boards more traditional Republican conservatives. Cargill, first elected in 2004, has spent more than a quarter-century as a science teacher in public schools.
Bahorich has strong credentials among movement conservatives. In 2012, she ran unopposed in the GOP primary to succeed former board member Terri Leo of Spring. Bahorich is a charter school advocate. She has a bachelors degree in financial management from Virginia Tech University and a masters in counseling from Liberty University.
