Record-breaking downpours soak Abilene like never before

Nellie Doneva/Reporter-News An SUV stands abandoned, with its windshield wipers still on, at Button Willow Avenue on Tuesday.

ABILENE, Texas - Record-breaking rain drenched Abilene Tuesday, beginning in the early morning hours and continuing throughout the day.

With rain still falling at midnight, the National Weather Service reported 8.25 inches of rain had fallen in Abilene on Tuesday, making it the wettest day Abilene has on record.

That beats the previous record of 6.54 on May 11, 1928, according to the National Weather Service. Records date back to October 1885.

The deluge caused street flooding in various areas throughout the city and resulted in a high number of water rescues in the morning hours. All available Abilene Fire Department units were dispatched early Tuesday, with 34 water rescues reported between 6:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.

is my hometown. I visited there last summer and the lakes were practically dried up. Talk about Dustbowl USA.

It's an interactive map so click on the reservoirs you are interested in and it will give the current lake level. I also read in the news that there was about three inches of rain in San Angelo yesterday.
