Evadale residents' message to people who ask whether the small town will consider removing the Confederate flag from the crest painted on buildings and signs throughout the school district is straightforward: Stay out of our business.

Officials at the paper mill that sustains the small Jasper County town and the U.S. congressman elected to represent the area acceded to those wishes. One week after the district's superintendent said he would take the community's pulse on the subject of many ongoing national discussions, they declined to say whether they support or oppose the district's crest.

Instead, communities throughout the South grapple with Confederate symbols on public property, local leaders have said the crest's fate is a question what should be answered only by a community of 1,400 people in a forested region about 25 miles north of Beaumont.

"Plain and simple, this is a discussion and a decision that should stay within the community and its school district," said U.S. Rep. Brian Babin, R-Woodville, in an emailed statement. "Education is a local issue. As the area's U.S. Representative, I will support the judgment and decision of the local citizens and their elected school board members."
