A collection of crosses in the Gregg County clerks office was removed voluntarily, officials said Thursday, after a nonprofit group sent a letter to the county objecting to the display.
The letter received this week, addressed to Gregg County Clerk Connie Wade, marks at least the third time time since March that the Freedom From Religion Foundation has targeted an East Texas entity. The national foundation, which has more than 22,500 members nationwide with more than 1,000 in Texas, promotes the separation of church and state.
Our members and members of the general public who have questions about state/church violations contact us when they see something happening in their community and ask for our help, said Rebecca Markert, a staff attorney for the foundation. We were contacted by a resident who said the county clerks office has a large display of crosses where people would go to get county business done.
The letter from the foundation was dated July 2 and addressed to Wade; however, the crosses in question did not belong to Wade, County Judge Bill Stoudt said. The collection belonged to one of Wades employees.
