As state employees get small raises, DPS managers enjoy larger salary bump

While many rank-and-file state employees will receive a small increase in pay this year, the Texas Department of Public Safety’s top managers are enjoying a much larger salary bump.

DPS Director Steve McCraw and 56 agency executives have been given double-digit raises, with most increases reaching 17 percent.

The raises come as DPS drastically expands its presence on the Texas-Mexico border, a move that has generated both support and criticism.

An agency spokesman noted that McCraw’s salary has lagged that of many state executives even though DPS is “responsible for protecting Texans from terrorists, cartels, transnational gangs, murderers, rapists and other heinous criminals and criminal acts.”

funding was moved away from the promised state owned road work and moved to the TX DPS for boarder pay raises and over time. The move taken quietly, over several months in the 2015 legislature, was not contested.
