Abbott: Texas to investigate claim that abortion clinics sell body parts
AUSTIN - Gov. Greg Abbott late Tuesday said state officials will look into whether Planned Parenthood clinics in Texas are harvesting fetal body parts as other officials here and across the country called for investigations following the release of an undercover video.
"The video of a high-level Planned Parenthood executive discussing the details of internal abortion procedures - including harvesting of baby body parts - is unnerving and appalling," Abbott said in a statement about the video, which appears to show the organization's senior director of medical services drinking red wine while discussing in graphic detail how to preserve the organs of a fetus during an abortion, and how much it would cost.
"In light of the video," Abbott said, "I have directed the Texas Health and Human Services Commission to conduct an immediate investigation of this alleged practice in addition to a separate investigation ordered by the Texas Office of the Attorney General."
The announcement of the investigations came after a day in which Republicans such as U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz and state Sen. Brandon Creighton of Conroe called for inquiries. Cruz, who is running for president, directed his demand toward Congress, while Creighton, a first-term state senator, urged the state health department to look into the issue.
