Clinton lands in McAllen for Cantu fundraiser

McALLEN — The unseasonably hot Rio Grande Valley wind warmed Hillary Clinton’s face as she stepped out of the jet at McCreery Aviation’s private airport just after 5 p.m. Thursday.

The former Secretary of State and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, have visited the area many times over the years. Construction magnate Alonzo Cantu, a Valley native, has been one of the Clinton family’s biggest donors. But Thursday marked her first visit as a 2016 Democratic presidential candidate.

As soon as she was shuttled off the tarmac, her caravan whisked her to Cantu’s house, where guests paid $2,700 a head to be in the same room.

State representatives from the Valley — all Democrats — met with Clinton’s staff around 3 p.m. Thursday to discuss her campaign, said Rep. Terry Canales, D-Edinburg. They examined the political campaigns of other Democrats and brainstormed what do to differently, he said.
