Seven patients treated after 22 people found in illegal group home

AUSTIN -- Medics are assisting several patients after finding them in an illegally operated group home for older adults on Friday, according to Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services officials.

EMS received a check welfare call on the 1800 block of Wildrose Drive at 3:16 p.m. When medics arrived, they found 22 people living in a 1,400 square foot house with no air conditioning, which caused various health problems for several of the residents, according to EMS officials.

Five patients had been transported at 8 p.m. Austin police, Austin Fire Department and Capital Metro were working to find somewhere to take 17 others, EMS officials said.

The group home is believed to be operated by a woman who is barred by the attorney general from operating assisted living facilities in Texas, according to Cecilia Cavuto, a spokeswoman with the state’s Department of Aging and Disabilities Services.
