Filing period opens for 2016 elections

AUSTIN — For all practical purposes, the 2016 Texas election cycle begins Saturday with a month-long registration period for the March 1 Democratic and Republican primaries.

“We’re ready,” said Lubbock County Republican Party Chairman Carl Tepper, who expects a good number of competitive GOP races throughout the state, including the open seat in Congressional District 19 that departing U.S. Rep. Randy Neugebauer of Lubbock has represented since 2003.

There is also the possibility that former state Rep. Jim Landtroop, who represented House District 85 for two years when he lived in Plainview, might challenge three-term incumbent John Frullo in Lubbock-based HD 84.

Landtroop told A-J Media last month that if he decides to challenge Frullo in the Republican primary, his former House colleague would be the first to know. He has until Dec. 14, the filing deadline, to decide.
