USS Texas, The DreadNought 2 wars could not sink.

USS Texas even survived 2 280mm rounds from German shore battery postions during D Day invasion. But the Republican Legislature finally scuttled the USS TEXAS by diverting 23 Million of the bond package into Ricks GAO Hole. Now they need 50 million more because the repairs were not made in time. Wonder where this 50 Million will go? Another act of God.


$23 million remains

Thomas, a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department employee, said that approximately $23 million remains from the bond issue. Repairing the ship and placing it in an on-land display would cost approximately $50 million. Without Legislative Budget Board approval of alternate repair plans, he said, the use of bond issue money is limited to a dry berthing project.

1. I read about the story yesterday.

It's such a shame because my grandfather's uniform from World War I is on display on the ship. They used to live about a mile away from where the ship was docked.

They has drastically cut funds for many historic site and make them all compete for the remaining crumbs.

For now, the Texas sits and leaks. TPWD doesn't have reserve funds available for emergency repairs of this magnitude.

But then, I don't think TPWD should have to address these kinds of issues, at least from a funding standpoint and without the help of the Texas Legislature. Maybe even those guys in Washington should be helping with this.

It's shameful to have a state agency put in such a difficult position. Maintain the ship, but without any substantial financial support. What are we thinking? We all have a stake in this.

This is no relic of a distant past. It's the Battleship Texas. It's a monument. It survived two world wars, but it's losing a battle with neglect and high-level indifference.

5. I read that too and it's heatbreaking

We're losing our history. We're losing the past but Ricky and his crew don't care. What's in it for them?

Good said the reality is that a steel hull on that battleship has roughly a 20-year lifespan. It's been close to 30 years since the Texas was last in a dry dock for repairs and renovation. Since then, it's just been sitting in a saltwater berth.

"It's just going to deteriorate," Good said.

It would take an estimated $29 million to put it back through dry-dock repairs, and the nearest dry dock capable of handling a battleship is in Alabama. That would be a long and dangerous trip.
