Lufkin rancher first to challenge Gohmert in a GOP primary
Lufkin rancher Simon Winston said Tuesday he decided to challenge the congressman for much of East Texas because he was tired of just complaining about U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert.
It's the first time Gohmert, a Tyler Republican, will face a challenger in a Republican primary.
"I'm going to give East Texas a voice again," the self-described conservative Republican said. "Mr. Gohmert, I think, is a career politician. And he's not doing anything but promoting himself on TV and not working for the people of East Texas' District 1."
Filing began Saturday for county, state and national offices. Winston, 57, said he has mailed his filing fee to the Republican Party of Texas.
