The Daughters of the Republic of Texas -- which had a 106-year custodianship of the Alamo -- is preparing for an early 2016 court date to block Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bushs efforts to claim ownership of the DRTs private library collection. The collection -- which includes books, maps and other artifacts from the states earliest days -- has been assembled and managed by the DRT since the 1950s.
The General Land Offices actions have been considered by some as the government taking private property, according to a press release from the DRT. The custodianship of the Alamo was transitioned from the DRT to the state in July.
Were puzzled by George P. Bushs actions during his first year in office, said Sandy Marble, president of the DRTs Aaron Estes Chapter. What appeared to have been a promising career seems to be at risk due to bad judgment and his overreach in an attempt to generate publicity. Were curious as to who is advising him on his management of the states land office, if anyone.
In addition to his efforts to claim ownership of the Daughters private library collection, hes been criticized for being away from the office to campaign and for firing GLO staff in order to make what some have characterized as political hires, Marble said. Its just disappointing, and it fuels further erosion of the publics confidence in its leaders.
