Texas A&M Buys A Law School (DFW area)

AUSTIN (June 26, 2012)--Texas A&M University is buying the law school at private Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth for $20 million, school officials said Tuesday.

Texas A&M has long sought to establish a law school and Chancellor John Sharp said having one will boost Texas A&M's prestige while also providing the first public law school in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Texas Wesleyan agreed Monday night to sell the school to Texas A&M, which will also sign a 40-year lease for the law school building.

The renamed Texas A&M Law School at Texas Wesleyan University will specialize in business and intellectual property law.

1. Texas A&M tried to connect with South Texas College of Law some years ago.

They got shot down. South Texas College of Law is a private independent law school that used to be one-half of a connection with South Texas Junior College. The Junior College fed GIs into the law school, after the war, and the GI Bill. This was back when you only needed 60 hours of college to go to law school, and it was called a Bachelor of Laws (L.L.B.). Now you have to have a bachelor's degree before you go to law school, and the degree was upgraded to a Juris Doctor. Law school is still 90 semester hours of pure hell.

And for many people it's NOT a three-year degree. I took five years because I was working full time at the courthouse.

Anyway, why A&M wants a law school just baffles me. I had never heard of Texas Wesleyan University having a law school in the first place.

Working full-time, my wife went to night school to get her law degree from T.W.

For what is worth, the law school had many leadership problems throughout the years.

3. What is the status of the new Dallas Law School that the Legis wanted?

The last that I heard the idiots in the Texas legislature wanted a state sponsored law school in Dallas. Does this deal replace that proposed law school? Given the Texas budget, the last thing that the state needs is another tier iv law schools sponsored by the state of Texas

4. Baylor used to have a relationship with A&M

I remember having a number of Texas A&M classmates and being told that Baylor gave A&M some preference due to its lack of a law school. I remember that Texas A&M tried to do a deal with South Texas Law School but that deal fell apart really quickly.

The state does not need another state sponsored law school. Moving this law school from tier iv is not going to be easy and so this law school may dilute the Texas A&M brand.

5. Maybe the legislature will now kill the proposed UNT law school

Some Dallas legislators really want a state law school in Dallas and the legislature authorized a University of North Texas law school to open in 2014. http://www.bizjournals.com/dallas/print-edition/2012/03/09/university-of-north-texas-law-school.html The construction for this law school is not fully funded and hopefully the legislature will kill it and restore some funding for public schools

6. Having made the mistake of attending law school....

I don't think there need to be any new or any more law schools. With the amount of lawyers who are struggling to find work, the supply has exhausted the demand. These schools will only exist to take the money of suckers. It is brutal out there for lawyers and I would highly advise any Texan who wants to go to law school to seriously reconsider or make sure that they are going in with a stacked deck (guaranteed connections/internships/jobs/networking).
