Abbott will weigh whether Hawk's top assistant should be new Dallas DA even after voting Democratic
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has a lot to weigh as he looks for the next district attorney of Dallas County.
Does the Republican governor pick an insider, or an outsider? Does he opt for a caretaker DA until the election two years from now? Does he carefully court a woman, African-American or Hispanic who might edge out a blue candidate in the mostly Democratic county?
One thing is certain only days after DA Susan Hawk resigned so she can focus on her mental health issues: The odds of an appointment for Messina Madson, Hawks first assistant DA and the current caretaker of the office, have already slipped considerably.
Voting records obtained by The Dallas Morning News show that Madson voted in the Democratic primaries in 2014 and 2016.
