Head of South Texas school district arrested on drug charge
CORPUS CHRISTI, TexasThe superintendent of a struggling South Texas school district has been suspended after he was arrested and accused of possessing marijuana.
Premont school district Superintendent Eric Ramos was put on paid administrative leave Friday following his arrest, the Corpus Christi Caller-Times reported.
The Duval County Sheriff's Office says Ramos was charged with suspicion of possession of less than two ounces of marijuana following a routine traffic stop Thursday evening.
The school district, in a rural farming community about 70 miles southwest of Corpus Christi, has been in danger of losing its accreditation due to poor academic performance. In 2012, the school district cut its sports programs to focus on academics. Last month, the district found it had met academic standards for the first time since 2011.
