Travis County DA-elect terminates prosecutors in restructuring effort

At least seven prosecutors at the Travis County district attorney’s office have been terminated as part of the incoming district attorney’s plan to restructure and improve how domestic violence cases are handled.

Several assistant district attorneys were let go after District Attorney-elect Margaret Moore required all employees at the DA’s office — about 90 — to reapply for their jobs, Moore said.

Many of those who were asked to resign handled domestic violence cases, including Assistant District Attorney Kelsey McKay. Moore said several attorneys with experience prosecuting domestic violence cases will remain at the DA’s office.

“It’s not uncommon that new DAs come in and replace some people, but I certainly was not expecting it,” McKay said, adding that it’s usually top positions that are affected.
