Lloyd's of London exec talks Texas, insuring the Cowboys and medical marijuana

For a lot of people, the most exciting thing about the insurance industry might be the gimmicky commercials: the talking animals peddling coverage for cars or motorcycles, the goofy spokespeople.

But for underwriters and risk assessors at Lloyd’s of London, a unique specialty insurance market, the industry involves learning a lot about everything -- from professional athletes’ body parts to terrorism and cybercrime -- before they take on risky bets that no one else will.

“I’ve been in this business for 35 years,” said Hank Watkins, president of Lloyd’s North America. “It’s fascinating all the different things that we can get into and understand.”

Watkins was in Dallas earlier this month as Lloyd’s opened its newest regional office.
