Texas state representative hit in head by stray bullet on New Year's Eve

HARLINGEN, Texas -- A stray bullet struck a Texas state representative in the head during a New Year’s Eve celebration early Sunday, he told CBS affiliate KGBT.

State Rep. Armando “Mando” Martinez, D-Weslaco was struck by the stray bullet while welcoming the New Year with his family.

“It felt like a sledgehammer hit me over the head,” said Martinez, who called KGBT from the hospital.

Martinez was rushed to Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco. Doctors later transferred him to Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, where surgeons removed the bullet.

I spent 4 New Years Eves in the Valley. Half the bangs you hear are guns going off. CanonRay Jan 2017 #6

and also keep the cats inside whenever a holiday rolls around. Last night I heard the music playing loudly at 4 in the morning from a couple of blocks away.

Glad I'm separated by large distances from others here. Saw fireworks tonight, across the river, about 1 mile away.

is that a state representative was struck, rather than some non newsworthy person, like a school teacher or a bus driver or maybe a 14 year old kid.

But never forget: guns make us safe.
