The swiftly reversed decision by the U.S. House Republican Caucus to gut the Office of Congressional Ethics late Monday resurrected an embarrassing chapter in the career of Congressman Blake Farenthold of Corpus Christi.
The online journal, Politico, reported around midnight Texas time that Farenthold was among the 119 congressional Republicans to vote to put the independent office under the jurisdiction of the GOP-controlled House Ethics Committee. There were 74 GOP votes against the move.
Politicos report included references to Farenthold being investigated by the office over accusations that he had sexually harassed a former staffer in his Washington office. The office finally recommended that the matter be dropped and no action taken against the lawmaker, now entering his fourth term.
The staffers allegations, vigorously denied by Farenthold, led to a lawsuit, which was settled in November 2015. The congressman said he "was glad to put this behind me" when the settlement was announced.
