Webb County Judge Jesus "Chuy" Garza indicted

Webb County Court at Law II Judge Jesus “Chuy” Garza was indicted Wednesday on charges that he solicited a loan from a woman who was involved in a case before his court.

Garza, 57, was charged with one count of gift to public servant by person in his jurisdiction, a Class A misdemeanor. A judge issued a warrant and a $2,500 bond for his arrest. Webb County Sheriff Martin Cuellar said Garza turned himself in at the jail at about 3 p.m. Thursday. He posted bond 30 minutes later.

The indictment alleges that Garza solicited from Shirley Mathis a $3,000 loan for Christopher Casarez in January 2015. Garza knew that Mathis was interested in providing the loan because he was the presiding judge in the estate of Carlos Y. Benavides Jr. and that she was the guardian of the estate, the indictment states.

The Texas Attorney General's Office is prosecuting the case.
