so there is plenty along the way. I would suggest taking US 290 from Houston through Brenham (where I used to live) to Austin. From Austin I would take US 183 north through Copperas Cove and US 281 north to the Stephenville area so that you get to see part of the Hill Country. Unfortunately the last part of the drive west of US 281 isn't very scenic (and in my opinion, downright ugly). However, the route I suggested keeps you going in the correct direction and on most of the main roads so you'll make decent time while traveling. The eastern half of the drive will be much more pleasant than the western half.

I would try to stay away from going north on I-45 out of Houston since the first hour out of Houston is rough traffic and somewhat boring after you get out of the pine forests. The area north and east of Waco is also mostly prairie where cotton is grown so you will want to avoid that also.

While the area around Fredericksburg is also in the Hill Country and pretty, it is also a bit out of the way and those highways may not be maintained as well due to the comparative lack of traffic compared to the eastern half of the state.

Word of advice: Most small towns are speed traps so obey the limit about two miles on either side of those towns to avoid tickets.

Bluebonnets & other wildflowers pretty good this year in the hill country; but you have to take the small roads to see them. Usually great around Mason county also, which is north of Fredericksburg.
