UTEP Pharmacy School set to start classes in August

The University of Texas at El Paso Pharmacy School, the first of its kind on the Texas-Mexico border, has received the okay to begin taking applications for its first class of students this fall.

The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education on Tuesday granted the program a pre-candidate status, which allows the school to begin classes in the fall semester. The decision was based on several criteria, including an intense two-day visit, curriculum reviews and a visit to the school's labs and classrooms.

“This is a significant step in what has been a long journey,” founding dean José O. Rivera said in a statement. "We have worked extremely hard to get to this point."

Rivera said the status is a watershed moment for the school, UTEP and the community because the school will offer a curriculum more in line with what is needed culturally in El Paso and in communities across the U.S. with growing Hispanic populations.

If you have a knack for the sciences, go for it. Just be prepared for 8- to 12-hour shifts on your feet, putting up with arrogant doctors, and dealing with people whose sicknesses make them disagreeable. But...the jobs are out there and the pay is alright.

And yes, I have a pharmacist in my family.
