Woman accused of stealing $58,000 from Bastrop sheriff's employee group
A court clerk for a Bastrop County justice of the peace was arrested Friday and charged with felony theft after a Texas Rangers investigation found she stole about $58,000 from the Bastrop Association of Sheriffs Employees over several years.
Cheryl Lynn Klaus, 54, who served as treasurer of the association, admitted to stealing money beginning in 2012 from the nonprofit set up to help Bastrop County sheriffs employees and their families, according to a criminal complaint unsealed Friday.
The missing money was discovered after a new board elected by the association in December combed through years of financial records.
Upon taking office, the new board members were told the association had $14,343.67 in its bank account. The board requested the associations financial records from Klaus, who never produced them, according to a sheriffs employee who serves on the board, the complaint said.
