DALLAS Lupe Valdez, the former Dallas County sheriff who grew up in San Antonio the youngest of eight children in a family of migrant workers, and Andrew White, who spent his early adolescence growing up in the Texas Governors Mansion, the son of Gov. Mark White, will face a May 22 runoff for the Democratic nomination for governor.
Valdez had 42.4 percent of the vote and White had 27.7 percent with nearly all precincts reporting by 1 a.m.. A candidate must receive more than 50 percent of the vote to avoid a runoff.
I am just really humbled that so many Texans who are ready for a change are giving me the opportunity to lead that change, Valdez told supporters at a Dallas County Democratic Party election night celebration at Dallasite, a shot-and-a -beer neighborhood bar with a strong union pedigree.
The last few months we have discovered that all of Texas is excited and energized by change, Valdez said. My little truck has been through the ringer as it helped us get across the state to hear from the people of Texas.

It is not any shock that these were the two candidates that made it into the runoff, but it was a surprise that Valdez pulled 42% considering that she had some weak TV performances and did not raise much money for advertising. Valdez won all of the major urban areas with the exception of Harris County where Mark White resides.

(11,885 posts)Who I'll vote for but one thing for sure, it will never be for greg abboutt. Or little rafael. Both taking health care away from millions in the state, and with their tax scam will hurt the rural area's the most as many smaller health care facilities will have to close. They also won't ban assault weapons of war, and will destroy Social Security. Vote these crooks out people.

(28,860 posts).. if the primaries are anything to go by.
Across the board, Reep voters greatly outnumbered the Dem voters.
Is this a harbinger for November?
This kind of surprised me because I thought Dems were going to
get a much bigger turnout.

(14,559 posts)In the two biggest races, Gov and Sen, the Rs pulled 1.5 million total votes while the Ds scored just over 1 mil. That's a 30% deficit.
In district 6, Joe Dicpic Barton's, the vote was almost 2:1 and Joe's not running for re-election. The sad part is that he withdrew his name so late that the State party was in a panic to get candidates and they still outvoted Ds by 2:1.
I'm sinking back into my electoral depression . . .
