Feds, unsettled by bombers skill, apparently random targets, seek dialogue (Austin)
The bombing in Southwest Austin on Sunday night was indicative of a bomber with even more skill than previously thought and an unsettling move toward apparently random attacks, federal authorities said Monday.
The device that detonated around 8:30 p.m. was more sophisticated than the previous three packages that killed or maimed four others this month and could have been triggered by anyone, said Fred Milanowski, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives special agent in charge of the Houston Field Division.
Interim Austin Police Chief Brian Manley confirmed on Monday that a trip wire likely triggered the blast that wounded two men, ages 22 and 23. Both men were in good condition Monday at St. Davids South Austin Medical Center, a hospital spokesperson said.
Christopher Combs, the FBIs special agent in charge of the San Antonio Field Division, said the device contained shrapnel.
