Bastrop car dealership accountant indicted for stealing over $200,000
Carlos Liriano was shocked when investigations concluded that one of his most trusted employees had allegedly taken at least $200,000 from his car dealership, Lost Pines Toyota, in Bastrop.
Gary Wayne Brummett, 67, was indicted by a Bastrop County grand jury last week on two felony charges of misapplication of fiduciary property, and one count of theft. He was arrested and booked into a Dallas County jail on April 12. Brummetts total bail has been set at $300,000.
When you have this type of failure by your trusted employees, its a tough thing. I would say its probably one of the toughest things Ive had to go through in my career, said Liriano, whos owned the dealership since 2012. Ive never been through anything like this.
Liriano hired Brummett as controller six months after he opened the dealership and was paying him a salary of approximately $130,000, Liriano said. Brummetts resume touted a bachelors degree in business administration from West Texas A&M University and over 30 years experience working for car dealerships across Texas, according to his LinkedIn page.
