Audit of the Alamo finds gaps in accounting, management under George P. Bush and General Land Office
AUSTIN An internal audit from Texas General Land Office called for overhauling the Alamos financial management after finding multiple missteps.
The GLO is responsible for managing the Alamo, but daily operations are contracted through the nonprofit Alamo Trust, Inc. (formerly Alamo Complex Management). According to the audit released Thursday, the contractor still uses state resources to operate the Alamo because it doesnt have its own funding.
"This is an unusual situation that has created complexity and a lack of clarity regarding the nature and the use of the funds used for Alamo operations," the audit states. "It is also the root cause of several of the observations in this report."
The Austin American-Statesman first reported on the audit in February, when it obtained a draft report dated Sept. 8. A spokeswoman for Land Commissioner George P. Bush told the Statesman that it had been altered, but the overall conclusions presented in Thursdays report are the same as the draft the Statesman obtained in February, the paper said.

The audit does provide some ammunition for Bush's Democratic opponent in the election.
