Alarmed by family separations, O'Rourke urges end to 'zero tolerance' during tour of immigration

Alarmed by family separations, O’Rourke urges end to ‘zero tolerance’ during tour of immigration facilities

HIDALGO — U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke, D-El Paso, got a first-hand look here on Monday of what he refers to as a humanitarian crisis: the detaining of immigrants and the separation of their families as part of the Trump Administration’s new zero tolerance policy.

O’Rourke, who’s challenging incumbent U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-TX, in November’s general election, met with members of the media Monday evening at Memorial Park after spending his afternoon visiting the U.S. Border Patrol immigration processing center and a U.S. Customs and Border Protection port of entry facility.

O’ Rourke, who spoke to reporters in front of the city park as parents watched young children play soccer nearby, visited the Rio Grande Valley to meet with immigrant detainees, asylum seekers, and to “address the inhumane separation of children from their parents, the treatment, well-being and living conditions of unaccompanied youth, the denial of a legal asylum process for those presenting themselves at our ports of entry…”

“We are better than this,” O’Rourke said just before sunset Monday evening. “I look forward to going back to Washington DC and working with my colleagues to make sure, whether it's working with this administration or passing laws to meet this challenge, we stop separating families.”

This is disgraceful, an outrage, and makes my blood boil. IMO, the people who authorized this policy ought to be hauled before an international court of justice and prosecuted.

I’m glad someone here is speaking up in outrage.

In the meantime, what are we hearing from Ted Cruz? The senior senator from Texas, John Cronyn? All the do-called “pro-family” operatives and politicians on the political right?

Crickets.
