WANTED: Jaywalking turtle escapes from sheriff, still on the loose

(RNN) – Why did the turtle cross the road? We may never know.

Williamson County, TX, Sheriff Robert Chody confronted a jaywalking turtle this week, but the turtle wasn't having it.

“I was trying to help this little guy out. I don’t think he appreciated my efforts. My heroic act for the day?? #TurtlesMatter,” Chody said on Twitter.

As Chody approached, the turtle quickly did a U-turn and shuffled off into the grass.

The suspect is still at large.

The comments on the Twitter thread are amusing since the sheriff responded to many of them.

When I was a kid, we had a turtle that a friend of my Dad's rescued from the road, too. We had the turtle for quite awhile till my Dad decided he deserved to be returned to the wild where he belonged, so we took him to a local artist's colony, lots of woods and not near any roads - with a stream running through it. The last I remember, he was dipping his head in and out of the water. I like to think he's still there.
