Social media spat leads to charge against Williamson County official

ROUND ROCK — In his 18 months in office, Williamson County Sheriff Robert Chody has built a Twitter following of more than 10,000 by sharing information about road closures and high-profile arrests and pictures of deputies and police dogs on the job and at play {and the jaywalking snapping turtle I posted about recently}.

Chody also recently weighed in on the management of county government in a series of social media posts that officials say offended County Judge Dan Gattis (R) and prompted the county’s chief executive officer to threaten to strip funding from Chody’s office.

On Wednesday, the feud went up a notch.

Gattis’ alleged threat crossed a legal line, say Williamson County prosecutors, who filed a misdemeanor official oppression charge against him. Law enforcement officials issued a summons for Gattis to appear in state District Court in lieu of being arrested.

Gattis did not immediately return a message left with his office Wednesday. If found guilty, he could receive up to a year in jail and a $4,000 fine.

Nothing pleases more than to see a group of Republicans fighting amongst themselves.
