Sens. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz berate Democrats, go easy on Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh

WASHINGTON — In Supreme Court confirmation hearings, the nominee is usually the one on the hot seat. But Texas Sens. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz asked easy questions of President Donald Trump’s nominee, saving their verbal barbs for Senate Democrats.

Senators began questioning Judge Brett Kavanaugh on Wednesday in confirmation hearings to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy, who was considered the swing vote on key issues including abortion, same-sex marriage, affirmative action and campaign finance reform. Conservatives hope that Kavanaugh’s confirmation could create a conservative majority on the court, potentially for decades.

During the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Democrats dug in on controversial issues. They grilled Kavanaugh about his views on Roe vs. Wade, campaign finance reform, health care, gun rights, the extent of executive authority, and his time in the George W. Bush administration.

Cornyn and Cruz, however, took aim at Democrats and lobbed basic questions to Kavanaugh.

1. Cornyn and Cruz don't think we have the right to question in detail a candidate for one of ...

the highest jurisdictional offices in the country. We deserve respect w/ regards to our ?s, and allowed plenty of time to question this candidate, who will possibly serve for some time in this office. Cruz and Cornyn won't be there forever but lots of people will be, after they are long gone. They're obviously not thinking about anyone else but themselves and how they can position the courts to finally gain some headwinds against some of the rulings made by courts over the last 30 years.

Short term thinking will do them in.

Perhaps as democrats, we have, I think, better and more achievable goals for all Amercans (long term) as well as short term (repair the damage done by Congressional repugs and rump). The repugs, the only goal I know of w/ them is cut more taxes increasing the federal debt, and not do anything about that debt, even though they crowed about it endlessly.
