'Get the screwdrivers out': After AG opinion, Dallas lawmaker again asks for Confederate plaque to come down
AUSTIN Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said there are multiple ways to remove a divisive Confederate plaque from the state Capitol, prompting a Dallas lawmaker to renew his calls for it to come down immediately.
Paxton issued an opinion Wednesday stating that either the Legislature, the State Preservation Board, the Texas Historical Commission or the Capitol curator have the authority to take down the Children of the Confederacy plaque. State lawmakers can pass a resolution requiring its removal, Paxton said, the curator can honor a lawmaker's request that it come down, or the board can act.
His answer clears up a lingering question over how to get rid of the controversial marker, which claims slavery was not an underlying cause of the Civil War.
Rep. Eric Johnson, D-Dallas, formally asked for the plaque's removal more than a year ago. In light of Paxton's opinion, he renewed his request Wednesday.
