WINNSBORO, Tex. Deep within the oak and pine forests that blanket this stretch of East Texas, the chug of machinery drones on late into the day, broken only by the sounds of a band of activists who have vowed to stop it
Here, among the woods and farmland, what might be one of the last pitched battles over the Keystone XL oil pipeline has been unfolding for weeks now, since construction of the controversial projects southern leg began in August.
As bulldozers and diggers churn up a 50-foot-wide path for the pipeline this portion will run from Cushing, Okla., to the Gulf Coast a small group of environmental activists have taken to the towering trees in its way.
And with the blessing of some landowners who live here, and whose property the pipeline will cross, the protesters have fashioned a web of tree houses, structures and pulleys in a last-ditch effort to keep the enormous project from rumbling forward.

(4,695 posts)one for gas (Liquefied Gas)? If our oil and gas are going to be taken from the holding tanks and facilities in Cushing, then the price will go sky high. Law of Supply and Demand. Low supply created her in America means a higher price of gas and oil products (like gasoline). We were told that it was a pipeline for Canadian tar sands oil to be taken to the coast for foreign export. Are American resources on the list also? Can American gas and oil be blended with Canadian tar sands. It should be illegal. Oil should be refined near Cushing, OK to be use here in America keeping the price of gasoline, as low a possible and thus helping out the economy.

(392 posts)This country has been exporting more oil products in the past few years with less purchasing because of the economy. Those that have not figured this out because they have not read about this fact should wake up.
The oil should be flowing EAST where it can be used domestically. Flowing oil south is like importing coal to states which export coal.
Wake up and join those who know.
California has oil and one improved oil patch will FRACK only if the oil is used IN STATE.
I SAY BUILD THE PIPE LINE ONLY IF THE OIL OR OIL PRODUCTS ARE NOT EXPORTED!!!

(20,190 posts)That's one of the reasons this is such a boondoggle. They're using eminent domain to take PRIVATE land for a private CANADIAN company. Other than some temporary jobs to construct the thing how does it benefit the U.S. as a whole? At best, they'll sell the oil to us at market price. It won't do a thing to bring gas prices down and if China or India will pay more, it will be right they at the Gulf of Mexico ready to export.
