Immigration differences bring John Cornyn, Ted Cruz and Joaquin Castro to Austin

AUSTIN — In separate news conferences one hour apart in the same room in the Texas Capitol on Wednesday, one group of Democrats and another of Republicans lamented the lack of bipartisan cooperation to address the growing flood of immigrants to the U.S. southern border.

Each group spoke passionately to reporters. But neither group spoke with the other.

"People in America, and more specifically people in Texas, want to get something done," said state Sen. Royce West, as Dallas Democrat. "Put all the issues on the table and figure out what you agree to.

"We should act like leaders instead of like children."

The Democratic event included several members of the Texas Senate and a few from the House. Also there was U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-San Antonio.
