$1 million in state cash to be sought for Alamo
The Texas General Land Office said it will ask the Legislature for $1 million next year to address an extensive list of issues at the Alamo, and try to privately raise several million dollars for structural preservation.
In its first biennium as the new custodian of the state shrine, the Land Office was appropriated $352,000. But Larry Laine, deputy land commissioner, told members of the House Committee on Culture, Recreation and Tourism on Thursday that the Land Office will make a one time only request for nearly three times that amount in next year's session.
We don't anticipate this to be anything ongoing, Laine told the committee while giving a brief report on the agency's assumption of custodianship at the Alamo under a 2011 state law.
Land office officials had said early this year that the agency would request $500,000 to support the state-owned, 4.2-acre Alamo complex for the next biennium.
