Innocence Project director calls for Bell County DA's recusal, punishment for prosecutors
The director of the Innocence Project of Texas called Tuesday for Bell County District Attorney Henry Garza and his office to recuse themselves from an upcoming trial.
The letter to Garza, dated Monday and obtained by FME News Service, addressed several points including that at least two prosecutors under Garzas supervision, Paul and Leslie McWilliams, kept important evidence from the defense team of George Powell, who was convicted of robbing a Killeen 7-Eleven. In addition, the McWilliams husband and wife duo reportedly sought and promoted perjured testimony from Demetric Smith, a states witness.
Garza said on Tuesday, Currently, as stated before, it is our intent to continue the prosecution of George Powell and execute the direction of the Court of Criminal Appeals.
Since the matter is in litigation at the moment, Garza said his comments must be measured in their response.
