Student who left newborn to die in trash can at Texas dorm gets 5 years in prison

A Waxahachie college student who put her newborn in a dorm trash can was sentenced to five years in prison for the child's death, officials say.

Natalie Annell Weaver of Springfield, Mo., pleaded guilty Wednesday to charges of manslaughter and abuse of a corpse.

In exchange, she was sentenced to five years in state prison for the manslaughter charge and 400 days for abusing a corpse, the Ellis County district attorney's office said.

The sentences will run concurrently.

Waxahachie police were called April 17, 2018, to a dormitory on the Southwestern Assembly of God University Campus for a welfare check. Someone had reported that Weaver, a student, may have given birth to a baby in the dorm.
