Rio Grande Valley residents could lose some of our most unique natural areas to the border wall before most of us have even had the opportunity to experience them.
According to the documents Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has released as part of their request for public input, they plan to build a 20- to 30-foot-tall bollard border wall, together with a 150-foot cleared enforcement zone and patrol road, running almost the entire length of Starr County.
Clearly these walls will be a blight upon towns like La Grulla, Rio Grande City, and Roma, requiring the condemnation of homes and businesses, subjecting neighborhoods to increased risk of flooding where border walls cross drainages, and marring the towns historic charm with their ugly and forbidding presence.
But walls built outside the Countys population centers would be destructive as well and could lead to the permanent loss of natural treasures that few people even know exist. Walls could also completely cut off our access to the Rio Grande as it flows through this ruggedly beautiful region.

(33,643 posts)endlessly ... it's much more important than the all-out environmental assault MF45 has launched upon the Nation ...
Sadly, these sorts of threads get like 3 posts at best.
Thanks for keeping up the good fight though TT, always bringing us important knowledge. There's definitely some of us who greatly appreciate it

(112,202 posts)I realize that some of the threads that I post won't receive any responses, but sharing the information here does serve a purpose. If nothing else, it does build a database of articles that someone may want to use in the future. Obviously, I'm biased, but if I was required to write a research paper on current events I would use DU as one the sites to begin the initial research. There is a lot of good information on this site that can prod a college student to dig deeper.
And yes, I also learn as I blog on DU. I was talking to a friend in Santa Fe on Friday and he was surprised by how well I was informed with the current events in his area. It makes it easy to carry on a conversation.
