Almost 5,000 Smith County families to see medical debt paid through Green Acres Baptist donations
Almost 5,000 Smith County families will see some or all of their medical debt canceled after Green Acres Baptist Church members donated money as part of a kindness initiative.
As part of the churchs KINDNESS25:40 emphasis, members of the church donated $45,102 through RIP Medical Debt to accomplish this debt forgiveness program, according to a church news release.
RIP Medical Debt is a nonprofit that allows donors and organizations to erase the debt of Americans whose lives have been destroyed by medical debt.
Because RIP purchases medical debt (for those least able to pay) bundled in large portfolios for pennies on the dollar, $1 donated to RIP relieves an average of $100 of medical debt, according to the news release.
That means the $45,102 Green Acres members donated clears $4.245 million in medical debt for 4,944 Smith County families.
