All Texas driver's license offices closed down

Gov. Greg Abbott shut down all Texas driver’s license offices Wednesday night to limit potential exposure to the new coronavirus.

The closings, for an indefinite period, will not apply to those seeking a commercial driver’s license.

Texas Department of Public Safety offices will open only for those seeking an initial commercial license — and only by appointment — to help meet delivery needs across the state, Abbott said.

“Our commercial drivers are essential to the consistent flow of goods throughout the state, and we will continue to ensure those seeking an initial CDL can do so,” Abbott said.

Those who didn't qualify to renew their licenses online or by mail, or forgot and planned to go into DPS to renew before expiration, will now have the expiration "forgiven" until further notice. Most people don't need to go in as long as they haven't let their license expire for two years, although this is not always true. I didn't notice that my license had passed its expiration date. It was only a few days after my birthday when realized, wait a minute...

I double-checked the year, just in case, and saw that my license had just expired. Even though they said you had to go in if it were two years or more, the website wouldn't let me renew, so I had to go to DPS, the bastards.

So the policy is always hit and miss in Texas, because this state can't do anything right. Still, it's worth a try to try renewing online, or to call DPS to see if they can work with you on it to get an up-to-date license.
