Owner of Big Beaners restaurant responds to concerns raised by Amarillo NAACP, LULAC

Jesse Quackenbush is responding after officials with the Amarillo branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), as well as the Texas League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), expressed their concerns regarding the naming of his new restaurant.

Officials from both organizations said the name of his restaurant, Big Beaners, was racist and offensive.

Quackenbush said there have been two recent incidents of vandalism to the restaurant. There were bricks with messages thrown through the windows. Quackenbush would not comment on what the bricks said due to the police investigating the incidents.

In a statement given to the Amarillo Globe-News in response to the NAACP and LULAC statements, Quackenbush states he would agree to change the name of Big Beaners “without admitting to any of (the organizations’) preposterous allegations of racism” if they follow certain terms.

Quackenbush also wants $27,000 for rebranding the restaurant.
