Friday protest turns tense in front of Austin police headquarters

A Juneteenth protest organized by the Mike Ramos Brigade turned tense Friday evening as protesters surrounded the Austin Police Department’s headquarters and a few people scuffled with officers, banged on the doors and shook the gates.

Officers arrested one person and pepper-sprayed others.

The protest began in East Austin as hundreds of people marched to the Capitol. Before the march got underway, protesters laid out their demands via megaphone:

‒ Fire Austin police officer Christopher Taylor, who shot and killed 42-year-old Michael Ramos in April as Ramos drove away from police who had surrounded his vehicle.

‒ Fire Austin Police Chief Brian Manley.

‒ Defund the Riverside Togetherness crime-reduction project.
