Texas Republican Sen. John Cornyn is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars meddling in the Democratic primary to face him, airing television and radio advertisements to boost a state legislator over Washington Democrats preferred candidate.
Tuesdays runoff election pits Air Force veteran M.J. Hegar against long-time state Sen. Royce West, with the winner set to face Cornyn, the second-highest ranking Senate Republican, in November. Democrats, looking at both an increasingly favorable national political climate and demographic and ideological changes throughout Texas, are cautiously eyeing the race as a pick-up opportunity as they seek to overcome Republicans 53-47 advantage in the Senate.
Democrats, independents and Republicans are just, frankly, disturbed by where the president has led this country, West said in a phone interview, expressing confidence in the Democratic Partys ability to win the state at the presidential and Senate levels in November. Were going to have to nationalize this race.
The race, as the final competitive Democratic Senate primary of the cycle, is also a test of a Senate Democratic political operation that is so far undefeated in steering its preferred candidates through primaries, and of the limits of Democratic voters preference for Black candidates in the weeks and months following the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement.

(25,372 posts)We have an issue here: MJ is a new Democrat who has never held office, although she ran and lost. She is a white and moderate. A decorated combat pilot, she's got lots of energy and is young.
Royce is kinda old and he just doesn't have "it". (He refers to himself in third person calling himself: "Royce West" he says things like "Who was there? Royce West"..."Who passed all these bills? Royce West"
He's great in the Texas senate and has alot of experience, but I get the impression he's more interested in keeping his day job in the Texas Senate than US Senate. This race will improve his stature in the state senate, which is great.
I voted for MJ.
I don't expect either to win, but I feel MJ will carry down ballot races better than Royce.

(2,674 posts)I live in the section of Dallas represented by Royce West. He has done a great job for our area and for all of Dallas County. He was instrumental in getting a branch of the University of North Texas located in here and also a law school in downtown Dallas. He has political chops; that is why Cornyn is running ads against him. West's opponent in the run-off, MJ Hager is a lightweight with no political experience.
As far as race goes, I am white and very pleased with Eddie Bernice (US representative) and Royce West, both African Americans. I have voted for both in every election they have been in.
