Regents to advance South Texas medical school plan

Now that plans for a medical school in Austin seem to be on track, University of Texas System officials are increasingly turning their attention to South Texas.

Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa is expected to sketch out new details regarding longstanding plans for a medical school in that part of the state when the Board of Regents meets Thursday in Austin. It’s not clear, at least to outsiders, what he has in mind. However, judging by how things work at the UT System, it’s a virtual certainty that the regents have been briefed and are poised to approve it.

Indeed, the system’s news release declares that officials will be announcing a “groundbreaking, transformational plan for advancing excellence in education and health in South Texas.”

<<snip>>

South Texas lawmakers have been pressing the UT System to advance plans for a medical school in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, an area of rapid population growth and inadequate health care.

As a former resident of Live Oak county, the largest county in the state without a primary care physician (pop. about 12,000), I applaud this news. BTW, the second largest county without a PCP is the adjacent county, Duval.
