Arrington, Cuellar reintroduce Ports-to-Plains act to extend I-27

U.S. Reps. Jodey Arrington, R-Lubbock, and Henry Cuellar, D-Laredo, have filed a bi-partisan bill to designate the remainder of the Interstate 27 corridor as a federal highway.

The Ports-to Plains Highway Act of 2021 would expand and upgrade the Ports-to-Plains Alliance Corridor to a modern, four-lane, divided facility to improve economic development, safety, and efficiency for America’s Heartland, according to a news release.

“Establishing a four lane, federal highway from West Texas through the Heartland is critical to enhancing America’s agriculture and energy dominance," said Arrington. "This investment in rural America will strengthen the supply from the largest agricultural and energy production centers to the rest of the country.”

Arrington said this is the next step in the sought after Ports-to-Plains interstate system, which would extend I-27 south to Laredo and the border with Mexico, and north through the Panhandle and eventually the Canadian border.
